CHAMPS

(Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety)

CHAMPS is a program originating from the Georgia Sheriff’s Association and approved by the GSA’s task force for education. It was designed to be a replacement for the DARE program which had become very expensive and time consuming for the Sheriff’s and their departments.

CHAMPS offer 23 blocks of classroom educational programs for the instructor to choose from to teach in the school. Instructors utilize a 12-week program with a graduation ceremony at the end. Classroom programs include drug awareness and abuse, alcohol abuse, character building and education, bullying, as well as ATV and boating safety.

CHAMPS has always been taught at a 5th grade level, but in 2008-09 the program will expand to include 7th grade also.

This past summer, Officer Cordell received his certification as a 5th and 7th grade CHAMPS instructor and is looking forward to teaching CHAMPS soon.
