Mrs. Purcell
has been teaching at FCMS since 2003 and currently teaches 7th
grade Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies. She also
serves as team leader, on the School Improvement Leadership
Team, and co-sponsors the FCMS Young Writers’ Club with Mrs.
Burtt.
Her education
includes these degrees: a BSED in Middle Grades from the
University of Georgia (1984); MSED in Middle Grades from
Brenau University (1988); EDS. in Instructional Supervision
from North GA College & State University (2005); and
Educational Leadership from North GA College & State
University (2008)
She is
certified in Middle Grades Language Arts, Reading, Social
Studies, and Math; Educational and Instructional
Supervision; and Teacher Support Specialist Supervision.
Prior to
teaching at FCMS, she taught sixth, seventh, and eighth
grade throughout her 17 years at Banks Co. Middle School.
She was named Banks County System Teacher of the Year in
1991.
She says that
she has always enjoyed learning and sharing her knowledge
and skills with children of all ages. She has taught
children from nursery age in her church at Glad Tidings
Assembly of God to college freshmen at Emmanuel College and
enjoys working with student and beginning teachers. Seeing
all ages grow in knowledge, character, and responsibility is
rewarding for her.
Her interests
include reading, writing, gardening, watching football games
(Go Dawgs!), her pets, and traveling. Following up on a
childhood goal to visit all of the fascinating places she
could only read about, she, her husband Dale, and three boys
(Dustin, Tanner, and Alex) have visited all 48 continental
states and parts of Canada together. She has also traveled
to the Bahamas, Argentina, and Uruguay. As she and her
family travel, they enjoy the time together learning the
history of the areas, seeing God’s diverse landscapes, and
collecting rocks and seashells as inexpensive souvenirs. Her
travels are often inspiration for her to write about the
adventures as well as opportunities to share her insights
and discoveries with her students.
Mrs. Purcell
was selected as the FCMS 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year by
her colleagues. She was also chosen to represent the
entire school district as the Franklin County Teacher of the
Year for the same year.
